How to Install a Custom Wallpaper on Xbox Wallpapers

Learn how to install a custom wallpaper on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S using a USB drive or Media Player, with tips for choosing the best image resolution.

Give your Xbox home screen a more personal look with a custom gaming wallpaper from PSW Wallpapers.

What you’ll need

  • An Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console
  • A JPG or PNG wallpaper
  • A USB drive, or a compatible network media server
  • The Xbox Media Player app

Step 1: Download your wallpaper

Choose an Xbox wallpaper from PSW Wallpapers. For the sharpest result on a 4K display, use the 3840 × 2160 version where available.

Copy the downloaded image to your USB drive.

Step 2: Open the Xbox personalisation settings

On your Xbox, open:

Settings → General → Personalization → My background → Custom image

The wording may vary slightly between Xbox dashboard versions.

Step 3: Select the image

Choose your USB drive, open the folder containing the wallpaper and select the image.

If the image does not appear, open it through the Media Player app first. Xbox supports selecting JPG or PNG images from USB storage or a compatible DLNA media server. Xbox Wire explains the custom-image process here.

Step 4: Set it as your background

Open the image full-screen, press the Menu button on your controller and choose:

Set as background

Return to the Xbox Home screen to see the result.

The custom image is stored locally on that Xbox console. Xbox Wire

Tips for the best result

  • Use a landscape 16:9 wallpaper.
  • Choose 4K for large televisions and Series X displays.
  • Keep important characters away from areas covered by dashboard tiles.
  • Use darker images if you want dashboard text to remain easy to read.
  • Xbox also supports dynamic backgrounds and selected game art as separate personalisation options on supported consoles. Xbox Wire
